GermGuardian

A good friend of mine just purchased this for her house. It is a UV-C light meaning the light can alter the genetic structure of bacteria and viruses thus killing them. It is not new technology and the first usage was in France (1909) to aid in disinfecting their water system. Its efficiency tests were quite impressive by the Harvard School of Public Health and an independent third-party laboratory.

But I wonder if this is a total necessity for the average household. Everyday our bodies fight off thousands of bacteria and viruses, and with that, our immune systems become stronger and smarter. If our immune systems do not get a chance to do this, well then, maybe our bodies do not gain strength and power?

Well, it is really a toss up…if you eat healthy, take care of yourself then maybe the GermGuardian can add a little more relaxing moments for your immune system. However if you are not willing to be proactive in your health and fuel your body optimally, then you are really doing a disservice to your body.

Non-GMO Project and Whole Foods

July 22nd, 2009 — 6:00am

I was very happy to read that Whole Foods Market is now participating two of their house brands in the Non-GMO project.

Let me step back a bit…

GMO stands for genetically modified foods.  It is the science of injecting the DNA of one species into another species to create plant, animal genes that do not naturally occur. This may allow for a perfect looking new species but we have no idea what the health consequences of this could have presently and in the future.

The Non-GMO project is a non-profit organization that is seeking GMO manufacturers to disclose their GMO products to the consumer. The FDA does not require this as of now.

I am all about consumers, patients, students…everyone really….to be allowed to have the resources to become knowledgeable and able to make their own decisions. I believe in this organization and will support it in anyway.

be-concious-whiteBe not a slave of your own past. Plunge into the sublime seas, dive deep and swim far, so you shall come back with self-respect, with new power, with an advanced experience that shall explain and overlook the old.”

SF new RECYCLING LAW

June 18th, 2009 — 6:27am

I was listening to an inspiring topic on NPR a week or so ago.  They were talking about the new recycling law that was recently passed in San Francisco. I already was familiar with some of the composting programs in SF- restaurants giving their leftover foods to compost companies who then give the compost to the farmers that supply their foods to the restaurants (nice little cycle!).

But now it will be mandatory for all - residents included! There will be three  garbage bins - one for trash, one for recyclables and one for compost ( this is so COOL!).

The city has a goal to reach zero waste to landfills by 2020 and it looks like the garbage collectors will be the ones making sure this happens. Residents will be reminded on how to properly separate their “wastes” from home. If anyone is found repeatedly not cooperating, they will be fined.

This is great article about the law in the  NY Times . We do some composting at home and we definitely recycle as much as we can. I wrote a recent blog about Vancouver’s recycling bins and all of this are great reminder for us all to try a little harder for our planet and really ourselves.
